Can I start a book review with a quote?

I have a summer assignment to write a book review on The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara. I remember before my SS teacher telling me not to start a particular essay with a quote. I want to start this book review with Chamberlain’s quote about man being the killer angel.

You may write it however you wish, but generally, quotes are used to support a statement that you have made. IDK, beginning a book report with a quote just feels, sort of like sensationalism: a flash in the pan. I would not choose to begin one that way.

it is perfectly acceptable to start an essay with a quote. the point of the opening sentence is to grab the reader’s attention, and if you can accomplish that by providing a quote, then i say do it

No, you aren't supposed to. Never start a sentence with a quote. You should "embed" the quote.

Example: Quote- "Go big or go home"

Good: A common theme found throughout the book is "go big or go home"
Bad: "Go big or go home" is one of the book's major themes.

If you cite the source of the quote then you should be fine as long as the quote is relevent to your essay.
