Comic Book Reviews: Justice Society of America 12, Fables 69
We picked up issue #2 of The Twelve, a great series that we highly recommend. The Twelve follows Golden Age heroes that wake up in the present day after being frozen for 60 years.
We really enjoyed the hero-packed issue #12 of JSA. Lots of heroes, lots of stories and they’re recruiting even more in this issue.
Fables issue #69 is more of a great series that we really like. The artwork is top-notch and the story is huge.
Then in our speed round we cover Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters #1, The Trials of Shazam #11, Jack of Fables #19, Proof #4, and Action Comics #861.
Today in our mailbag, we talk about how comic books tackle social issues like underage drinking and gambling. Thanks to the great question from JLTiberi on the Pulp Secret forums.

I think JSA is one of the best team themed magazines on the market right now. JLA is suffering, and Avengers is missing something right now.

Hey guys, I was wondering what you’re most looking forward to or which you think will be better out of DC’s Final Crisis or Marvel’s Secret Invasion?

Things I remember because I’m a nerd: Generation X tackled under-age drinking. Husk was kind of a lush for a few issues there.

One of these day, …
One of these day, Pete is going to loose it in the studio! Alex and Justin tease him constantly (which I find funny too and spices it up!). The dynamics are one of the reasons I watch..aside from comics of course. I watch Comic Book Club too and that is even more hilarious and even better ’cause its improvised and much longer.

comics have gone …
comics have gone over alot of real world issues ever since green arrow-green lantern in the 1970’s but i can’t think of an underage drinking storyline. even ultimate ironman didn’t drink till he was 21.
maybe we need an issue of teen titans involving some cheap cider, a parkbench and robin needing his stomach pumped.

@erislaughs: No, …
@erislaughs: No, you’re totally right… I think we should have specified “Mainstream, Marvel & DC, superhero comics.” We’ve actually discussed this a lot before, both here, and on our live show, and the general conclusion is that most comics writers aren’t sensitive enough to know how to handle it. I’ll mention the issue of Alpha Flight where Northstar come out of the closet. Bully to the writers for letting him do so. Boo to them for doing it in such a clunky way.

I drank more when I …
I drank more when I was underage than I do now. It was like I had to get it out of my system early or something. Not that getting drunk when your body is too young to really handle it is a totally rad idea or anything. I just think it’s kind of a complicated issue. I would love to see a mainstream comic pull of a decent underage drinking story, but I don’t see it happening. Just the term ‘undeage drinking’ in a story brings back lame Dawson memories.

I just dont agree …
I just dont agree that comics arent a forum for nuanced exploration, at all. They have been, and they can be and still are in some cases. Im not trying to be harsh, but that kind of generalization is pretty shocking.
I assume you just mean DC and Marvel comics, in which case I would still disagree, but to nail that on the whole medium is short sighted and provably false.
Still love the show. Especially Pete, STAY STRONG PETE!

Hey guys, I’ll borrow your first and second issue of The Twelve!
If I remember correctly there have been some Marvel comics (Spiderman comes to mind) that dealt with issues like drug abuse and other stuff fairly well even though it was supposed to be a taboo subject in comics. Perhaps some issues are still taboo?
Pete - keep up the good work!

You guys manage to humiliate Pete every episode. I imagine that at some point in the future he’s just going to say “screw it” and leave. He’ll be replaced and the show will never be the same.
